The e-way bill, short for electronic way bill, is a digital document that facilitates the movement of goods under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. Here are the key points about e-way bills:

Purpose:The e-way bill serves as evidence of the movement of goods from one place to another.It is generated electronically and must be carried by the person in charge of the conveyance (such as the transporter) during the movement of goods.

Applicability:E-way bills are applicable for both inter-state and intra-state transportation of goods.They are mandatory when the value of the goods being transported exceeds ₹50,000.

Generation Process:Registered GST taxpayers or enrolled transporters can generate e-way bills through the e-Way Bill Portal The portal captures details such as the consignment’s origin, destination, and value.

Reporting of HSN Code:As of 1st February 2024, the e-way bill system requires reporting of 4/6 digit HSN codes for the goods being transported .HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods based on their nature and type.

To generate an e-way bill, follow these steps:

  1. Login to the E-WayBill System:
    • Visit the E-WayBill System portal.
    • Enter your username, password, and the captcha code.
    • Click on “Login” to access your account.
  2. Generate a New E-Way Bill:
    • Once logged in, click on “Generate new” under the “E-waybill” option on the left-hand side of the dashboard.
  3. Provide Details:
    • Fill in the necessary details for the e-way bill, including:
      • Origin and destination of the goods.
      • Value of the goods (should exceed ₹50,000).
      • HSN code (if applicable).
      • Transporter details (if any).
  4. Submit and Generate:
    • After entering all relevant information, click on “Submit” or “Generate.”
    • The system will create the e-way bill electronically.
  5. Carry the E-Way Bill:
    • The generated e-way bill must be carried by the person in charge of the conveyance (such as the transporter) during the movement of goods.

Remember that e-way bills are mandatory for both inter-state and intra-state transportation of goods
