Senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor recently weighed in on the ongoing debate about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s age and potential retirement. Tharoor asserted that we need not wait until September 17, 2025, as Modi will not be in the PM post after the Lok Sabha elections. According to Tharoor, a new government will come to power by June 4, which is the counting date for the election results.
This statement comes amidst a furore over AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal’s claim that PM Modi is asking for votes for Home Minister Amit Shah, who will supposedly succeed him after Modi “retires” upon turning 75 in September 2025. However, several BJP leaders have outrightly rejected this claim, asserting that Narendra Modi will continue as the Prime Minister and complete his third term.
Tharoor also criticized Modi’s rhetoric, expressing concerns about the quality of his speeches and the language he uses. According to the Congress leader, Modi has lowered the standard of public discourse, which he deems detrimental to the nation’s well-being. Additionally, Tharoor defended Congress’ decision to abstain from attending the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya earlier this year, emphasizing that Lord Ram does not belong exclusively to any political party.

In a separate instance, Tharoor accused PM Modi of shifting the political agenda every election year and criticized the BJP-government for allegedly failing to protect the nation’s borders from Chinese encroachment. Tharoor’s observations highlight the ongoing political dynamics and debates surrounding Modi’s leadership and the upcoming elections.
Furthermore, during PM Modi’s recent reply to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address, Tharoor commented that Modi seemed to be repeating the same speech, questioning whether the Prime Minister was tired or lacked fresh content. Clearly, Tharoor is closely monitoring Modi’s actions and statements, providing a critical perspective on the political landscape in India.
